Misgendering someone can lead to feeling “‘othered’, or alienated and different from the rest of [the group].” Consistent misgendering increases the experience of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts (1).

Making intentional efforts to use the preferred pronouns and names, quickly apologizing and correcting yourself when you slip up and use the wrong pronoun/name, asking someone what pronouns/name they prefer when you meet someone new, and correcting others when they misgender someone have profound impacts on supporting the mental health and feelings of belonging for those in the queer community.
