Call To Worship: MLK Sunday

Written by Rev. Dr. Christie Love

As we honor the life, leadership, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this week we center his words and his thoughts to challenge our perspectives and our actions. Dr. King once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

In the face of deep divisions and conflicts- may we choose the way of love and not the way of hate.

Dr. King challenged the world by teaching that, “The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand in times of challenge and controversy.”

In these times of challenge and controversy, may we speak up for others and not be silent about issues of justice.

Dr. King proclaimed that “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.”

May we be focused on making the world better and safer not only for ourselves- but for the benefit of all people.

Prayer:

God, may we be ready to love when we see opportunity, advocate when we witness injustice, and help when we observe a need. May we not falter in our responses and know that it is always the right time to the right thing. Guide us each day in finding and doing the next right thing you are calling us to. Amen.
