Training Portal for Working with the Unsheltered
Written and Developed by Christie Love
To help our members improve their knowledge, awareness, and involvement, we have constructed a training portal that covers a wide variety of topics, including; trauma, lived experience, language, system understanding, medical vulnerabilities, addiction, mental health, crisis intervention skills, social issues, de-escalation, media depictions, and connections to other resources.
Trauma Training Takeaway: It is important to remember that homelessness is a traumatic experience and often times those who are navigating shelter instability have higher than average trauma experiences in their past. While there are thousands of unique circumstances that can lead someone to the experience of being unsheltered, all paths contain one common element… trauma. Understanding a trauma framework should reshape the awareness, approaches, and activities of faith communities, organizations, and municipalities.
