Call to Worship: The Cost of Discipleship
Written by Rev. Dr. Christie Love
Call to Worship
Early in the ministry of Jesus, he called a dozen individuals to follow him. This invitation required these disciples to change their location, their priorities, their plans, and their activities. The stories of their experiences, their doubts, and their faith helped to create our gospels and much of our New Testament.
May these examples of Biblical discipleship challenge us and change us.
Those who choose to follow the teachings of Jesus are still called Disciples today and like the group that Jesus called out to, we also have to wrestle with the cost of discipleship. The changes that we need to make in our lives to put others ahead of ourselves, to seek God first, to love our enemies as ourselves, and to show care and compassion to those who are oppressed in our culture.
May we strive to follow the teachings of Jesus, even when it costs us something.
Prayer
Holy God, may we be committed to following your ways in the world. May our community know us individually and as a church by our love, care, courage, compassion, advocacy for justice, inclusion, and peace-making efforts. Amen.
